About Physical Therapy

It is a health science that studies, prevents and treats functional kinetic disorders intercurrent in organs and systems of the human body generated by genetic alterations, trauma and acquired diseases. The physical therapy supports its actions in therapeutic mechanisms systemized by studies of biology, morphological sciences, physiological sciences, pathology, biochemistry, biophysics, biomechanics, kinesis, functional synergy, and systems of the human body and the behavioral and social disciplines.

The professional with high education training, is enabled to the construction of the diagnosis of functional kinetic disorders, the prescription of physical therapy conducts, the follow-up of the evolution in the clinical and functional conditions.

General Information about Physical Therapy at FMRP-USP

The Undergraduate Program in Physical Therapy at the School of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto (FMRP)-USP, has 40 admissions annually, organized in a serial structure, with a system of credit in a period of five years. By the fourth year of the course it takes place in the afternoon-evening, from 4.30 p.m. to 10 p.m., from the third year from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. and in the last year it is full time.

The curriculum is presented in a balanced way in the different areas, taking into account the prevalence of the different health problems of the population and levels of scientific evidence obtained through physical therapy to treat each one. The course enables since the first year the engagement of students in different working fields of the physical therapist to experience the profession. Basic, clinical, and specialized concepts related to Collective Health are distributed in disciplines that aim to develop in students a critical reflective attitude towards the role of the physical therapist in the context of the National Health and specifically in the Unified Health System. Throughout the course the identification of the Community needs are emphasized and the student is qualified to act at the three levels of health care in family health centers, and Rehabilitation Centers (CSE, CER and CIR) and at the General Hospital of Ribeirão Preto and at the Emergency Facility of the FMRP-USP.

The physical area for development of practical activities in applied disciplines and professional internships have been significantly expanded, counting on now with the Rehabilitation Center of the General Hospital (CER) established in 2007 in full operation and the Rehabilitation Service of the State Hospital of Ribeirão Preto (SER) founded in 2008.

The professional profile of the student who is to conclude the course is a generalist Physical Therapist. The students learn to work in different areas of Physical Therapy, including Orthopedics, Cardiorespiratory, Neurology, Pediatrics, Geriatrics, Dermato-functional and Women’s Health.

It is worth emphasizing the important tendency of this course to provide scientific initiation to students, which can be verified by the significant number of scientific initiation scholarships obtained.

To conclude the Undergraduate Program in Physical Therapy, the student should prepare a work under faculty guidance, which might vary between a survey conducted by the student during the course, or a scientific paper, a case report, etc.
